Gaming AI presents
Diplomacy AI
Diplomats who negotiate back
Every war ends at a table, and now you get a seat at it. Instead of picking from a menu, you sit down with another nation's diplomat in Hearts of Iron IV and talk it out: make an offer, push back, call a bluff, settle for less. Peace treaties, deals and more, argued in your own words.
Not out yet: it launches with the Gaming AI app, and the download will be right here on this page.
What negotiating looks like
Being captured now
Peace talks with an enemy diplomat, from the first offer to the handshake.
-
You
We'll pull back from the river if your government recognises the new border in the north.
-
Envoy
Recognise it? My government would sooner recognise the weather. The north stays ours. The river crossings, perhaps, we could discuss.
-
You
Then we keep the river, and the crossings, and we stop talking.
-
Envoy
Let us not be hasty. Two of the crossings under joint administration, and the north left as it stands until a commission meets. That is the most I can carry home.
The outright refusal, the bluff that gets called, and the fallback offer the diplomat had in their pocket all along.
-
You
We need oil, and you have more than you can burn. Name your price.
-
Envoy
Oil is easy. Selling it to you is not. Every barrel I send you is a barrel my neighbours will ask about. Give me a reason I can say out loud.
-
You
Say it's for trucks. We'll build the ones your army has been short of all year.
-
Envoy
Trucks I can explain. Thirty tankers a month, and the first one sails when your trucks reach my port. Not before.
They want something too, and they say what. The deal that comes out of it is one you argued into shape.
-
You
We're asking for passage, nothing more. Our troops go through, and they're gone within a month.
-
Envoy
Armies that pass through have a habit of staying. My answer is no.
-
You
You know we could simply come anyway.
-
Envoy
You could. Then you would be at war with us, and with everyone who has promised to stand beside us. I would think about that on the train home.
Not every talk ends in a deal. A diplomat who can't be pushed around is what makes the ones you do win worth winning.
We wrote these for the page, and the envoys aren't anyone real. You negotiate with each nation's diplomats, never its head of state. They argue their own government's case, and they don't give ground for free.
Run the talks yourself
You're the United States in 1944, trying to talk Japan into peace before it capitulates, which the base game won't let you do. Three rounds, three moves each, and an envoy whose patience you can run out of. This sample is scripted, free and sends nothing. In the game there are no buttons: you type whatever you like and the diplomat answers it.
Same offer, three different envoys
Every envoy argues their own government's case, so the words that close one deal can end the next conversation.
-
You, to each of them
End the war today, and the northern provinces come to us.
-
The proud envoy
Hand over? My government has not lost this war, whatever your maps say. Bring me an offer a proud nation can sign, or bring me nothing.
-
The desperate envoy
My government is prepared to discuss the northern provinces. Not all of them. Our cities are cold this winter, and I would rather carry home a bad peace than none.
-
The careful envoy
The north is a large word. Which provinces, from which date, guaranteed by whom? I sign nothing I have not read twice, and neither does my minister.
Written for this page, and none of the three is anyone real.

- Nothing you say changes the answer

What it works with
- The current version of Hearts of Iron IVWe update Diplomacy AI when Paradox patches the game, so it keeps working after an update.
- No DLC neededIt works with the base game. The DLC you own works as it normally does.
- IronmanYou can play Ironman with it.
- Single-playerMultiplayer isn't supported at launch.
- Other modsBuilt and tested on the base game. Big overhaul mods change things it relies on, so combining it with one may not work.
- WindowsDiplomacy AI runs through the Gaming AI app, which is for Windows.

Download Diplomacy AIYou can find out for a dollar
The mod is free. The conversations are paid for in Vigor, spent while you talk. Never per hour, never per month, and it doesn't expire, so the months of war between negotiations cost you nothing.
The smallest pack is 99¢. On a budget model that's around 4,000 replies, about 40 for every cent. Pricier models give fewer, and so do games that send a lot with each message, since you choose the model and they don't all cost the same. The bigger packs are better value; this one is there so trying it costs next to nothing.
What a negotiation costs
- A quick trade deal About 6 replies Under a cent
- A peace treaty About 10 replies Under a cent
- A whole campaign of diplomacy About 60 replies About 1.5¢
On a budget model, at about 40 replies to the cent. Long-winded envoys, and long-winded players, cost a little more.

Hearts of Iron IV questions
If yours isn't here, get in touch.
Who makes Diplomacy AI?
Gaming AI does. Diplomacy AI is built for Hearts of Iron IV to work with the Gaming AI app. The mod is free; the conversations are paid for in Vigor, like everything else.
Who do I actually talk to?
Other nations' diplomats. You don't speak to world leaders directly: you sit down with the envoy a country sends, and they argue their government's case.
What can I negotiate?
Every diplomatic option in the game, plus extra options for making peace. Make an offer in your own words and the diplomat answers it: they agree, push back, or come back with terms of their own.
Does it work with Ironman?
You can play Ironman with Diplomacy AI.
Does it work with other mods?
It's built and tested on the base game. Big overhaul mods change things it relies on, so combining it with one may not work.
How far does a dollar go?
Around 4,000 replies on a budget model, about 40 for every cent. Pricier models give fewer, and so do games that send a lot with each message, because you pick the model and they don't all cost the same. Vigor is spent on the conversation, what you say and what comes back, and doesn't expire, so nothing runs down while the war plays out between conversations.
Do I need a good graphics card for this?
No. The model runs on our servers, so it doesn't slow Hearts of Iron IV down.
When can I get it?
At launch. Diplomacy AI ships alongside the Gaming AI app. The download button on this page switches on the day it does.
Diplomacy AI is made by Gaming AI. Hearts of Iron IV is a trademark of Paradox Interactive AB, and Gaming AI is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Paradox Interactive. The game's name is used here only to describe compatibility.
